Spent Butt Press

The spent anodes are removed from the support “yoke” and crushed for reuse in the anode production plant.

This spend butt press has had considerable redesign work done on it since commissioning in 1996.

Comtec have redesigned the 600 tonne hydraulic cylinder which supplies the force to remove the anode from the “yoke” assembly. The original cylinder was a welded construction which had inherent fatigue weakness in the welded flange to cylinder barrel connection.

Comtec redesigned the cylinder in 2002 to a cast shape with integral flanges to remove the fatigue issue. This is still in use.

The mechanism for crushing the anode material was also revised by Comtec in 2007 and resulted in lower pressure in the hydraulic ram and less stress in the associated components with considerable savings in maintenance costs.
